SICKNESS, LIFE THREATENING

[The majority of our prayers concern physical health. We all know someone who is dealing with a life-ending disease. Here is an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

FACING DEATH

screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-3-02-47-pm…O LORD, are You not a GOD in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In Your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you (2 Chron 20:6).

____ is afflicted and facing death. As an intercessor, LORD, empower me to stand firm. As the inevitable looms give me the fortitude to stand before You and cry out to You in ____’s stead for You will hear  (2 Chron 20:9).

____ is powerless, but, FATHER, keep (his/her) eyes on You (2 Chron 20:12). I know the battle that is before (him/her) is not (his/hers), but Yours (2 Chron 20:16). (He/She) will not need to fight in this battle but only to stand firm—to hold (his/her) position and see Your salvation on (his/her) behalf. (He/She) will not need to be afraid or be dismayed, for You, LORD, will be with (him/her) (2 Chron 20:17). I pray CAPTAIN OF HOSTS, that You give (him/her) this understanding.

Power belongs to You, FATHER, (Ps 62:11). You who made the heaven and earth, (his/her) help is in Your name (Ps 124:8). Show Yourself in mighty acts that will greatly enlarge (his/her) faith in You.

THE RADICAL GOSPEL

screen-shot-2016-10-14-at-1-25-25-pm…FATHER, guide ____ to always make You the hero of anything (he/she) says. The accomplishments and goals of life do not come from human efforts as non-Christians think. Christians have a radical view of life and care nothing about earthly success.

“This view of life is that we are a people chosen by a sovereign, loving, God who, in Christ, has forgiven us and adopted us into his family. He is at work in each situation to conform us to the image of his Son, supplying all that we need to do what he has called us to do….we are weak vessels of clay that have been filled with the all-surpassing power of God’s presence” Paul David Tripp (ref#5, p297).

“The saint who is intimate with Jesus will never leave impressions of himself, but only the impression that Jesus is having unhindered way…” Oswald Chambers (ref#7, Jan 7th).

WORKINGS OF THE SPIRIT

Screen Shot 2016-08-24 at 3.49.48 PM…FATHER, I thank You that I cannot find out who commits the “unpardonable sin” for it would surely devastate me. I know You glorify Yourself through dispensing wrath since You are holy and only bless ones who are holy through their embracing the cross of Your Son, but I sure don’t want ____ to suffer forever without You.

FATHER, I pray ____ come to understand Your SPIRIT’s work:

“It is the Holy Spirit’s work to enlighten the mind of sinners (Eph 1:17,18), to reveal and teach the gospel (John 14:26), persuading souls to repent and believe the truth (cf. Acts 7:51)” The Reformation Study Bible (ref#56, p1421, “The Unpardonable Sin”).

Your SPIRIT not only explains Your Word, but will open ____’s mind so (he/she) can perceive it (2 Cor 3:16,17).

I pray ____ has not deliberately and knowingly refused what the SPIRIT freely gives. I pray (he/she) has not committed such a “voluntary and informed act of malice” to the point that (his/her) heart is so hardened making (him/her) unable to repent (Heb 3:12-13) (ref#56, p 1421, “The Unpardonable Sin”).

I know there is a profound act of hatred that You have determined You will not forgive—indeed, cannot forgive. And, I know You must respond to offenses against Your love, but I pray that You continue to beckon ____. I pray (he/she) has not gone beyond (his/her) ability to turn back toward You. Send Your SPIRIT, FATHER to persuade ____ to repent and believe the truth!

PROVISIONS

[We all know someone who is dealing with financial problems. Here is an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

PROBLEM WITH WEALTH

Screen Shot 2016-08-24 at 1.11.33 PM…FATHER, I pray that ____ not be asking for abundance. For (he/she) will not be able to be rendering a slave’s obedience to You and, at the same time, possess a passion for accumulating wealth (ref#37, p14, [Matt 6:24]).

Move ____ to realize (he/she) cannot eat or drink or wear more than a day’s supply and that any surplus left over from the day (he/she) will have the care of storing and watching against theft (ref#34, Feb 14th AM).

Aid ____, LORD, to understand the problem with wealth, as well as the benefit of poverty. JESUS lived with voluntary poverty for it disconnected Him with everything that chains people down to this world. Because of it He was able to go wherever His FATHER wanted Him to go (ref#8, Nov 6th).

GENERAL SICKNESS:

PSALM 41

Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 4.03.14 PM…FATHER, You have placed ____ in a situation that makes (him/her) poor and helpless. Yet, FATHER, You pursue ____. You find (him/her) out, and look into (his/her) circumstances. You will not neglect, pass by, or be indifferent to ____’s plight (ref#16, [Ps 41:1]).

(He/She) is blessed because You rescue (him/her) in the day of trouble. In (his/her) distress You dignify (him/her) (Ps 41:1). FATHER, like a mother tending to a sick child, You make ____’s bed of pain tolerable for (him/her) causing (him/her) to bear the affliction with patience, and making (him/her) cheerfully wait the result. ____’s soul shall be, by Your grace, made to dwell at ease even when (his/her) body lies in pain (ref#18, [Ps 41:1-4]).

FATHER, I know that You will be gracious to ____. I know You are pleased with (him/her) and any enemies will not triumph over (him/her) because of (his/her) integrity that You have placed in (him/her). You joyfully keep (him/her) forever in Your presence (Ps 41:11-12).

You, O LORD, will not restrain Your mercy toward (him/her). Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness will ever preserve (him/her) (Ps 40:11). What effect can a mere illness or injury have on ____ when You uphold (him/her)? In the sight of You, ____’s affliction shrinks to nothing. I praise You who are all steadfast love.

FATHER, please note—I am not the ruler of my life asking for Your help. I am recognizing Your lordship and resting my trust in You for ____.

SORROW

[“Blessed are those who mourn…” (Matt 5:4 NASB). We know people who are grieving; let’s pray for them. Fill the name in the blanks to this prayer.]

DEPTH OF GRIEF

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 4.32.39 PM“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever” (Heb 13:8 NASB).

FATHER, cause ____ never to lose sight of this fact—during grief, there are two things (he/she) can be sure of. One, (his/her) emotions will change. And, two, You won’t (ref#136, p18).

LONGSUFFERING COMFORTER, keep me from saying to ____ something like—“Just hold on GOD will get you through.” I know that is true and (he/she) knows that is true but the experience of it is not there yet. Your comfort does not take away the ache, but FATHER, I pray for ____ to feel Your support in the middle of (his/her) suffering (ref#136, session 1, p2).

And, LORD, urge me to be a sympathetic friend who comes close to understanding the depth of (his/her) grief. Keep me from suggesting (he/she) move faster than (he/she) is going in (his/her) walk of sorrow. (His/Her) one loss brings layer upon layer of losses that (he/she) must acknowledge to (himself/herself) and mourn (ref#136, session 1, p8).

Remind me of some examples of possible losses that I may long suffer with (him/her): “job, home, possession, relationships, companion, confidant, lover, source of laughter, cuddler, cook, mechanic, gardener, shoulder to cry on, walking partner” Church Initiative (ref#136, session 1, p 8). Grief affects every aspect of (his/her) life (ref#136, p19).

DESTITUTE AND HELPLESS

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 2.03.00 PM…FATHER, Your Son did not come to call men righteous in character—ones who satisfy themselves by doing good things. He calls those who (know they) are sinners by nature (ref#37, p21, [Matt 9:13]). LORD, Your Son is moved with compassion by those who are exhausted by their troubles and their long aimless wanderings, and have thrown themselves to the ground in an utterly prostrate condition as sheep not having a shepherd (ref#37, p23, [Matt 9:36]).

As long as ____ is successful and independent or hanging on to even a thread of self-respect, (he/she) will not turn to consider giving (his/her) life over to You. But, when (his/her) pride is shattered and (his/her) life is ready for love (he/she) will not escape Your notice, will (he/she) (Ps 51:17)? You do not despise a broken and repentant heart. In (his/her) distress, when (he/she) seeks You, You will be found by (him/her) (2 Chron 15:4).

It is CHRIST who will cause ____ to cease pursuing a righteousness for (himself/herself) and it is CHRIST who will take away (his/her) burdens and refresh (him/her) with rest (Matt 11:29).   FATHER, You know what circumstances (he/she) needs; bring (him/her) to Yourself. Your promise is: “…I will even make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the dessert” (Isa 43:19 AMP).

TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 11.41.02 AM“…do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Cor 4:18 NKJV).

FATHER, I pray for ____. Since much of the hope for help in the physical world is exhausted, I plead You come to (his/her) assistance.

Give (him/her) trust enough to see Your Son as He is—(his/her) beloved Physician. As ____ trusted (his/her) earthly doctors by handing the pharmacist an unreadable prescription, favor (him/her) to rely on (his/her) heavenly Physician. For it is ____’s business to trust and JESUS’ business to prescribe (ref#34, Aug 14th PM).

Cause ____ to have no desire “to analyze all the medicine or evaluate all the symptoms” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, Aug 14th PM). “When a believer is sick, he must place his comfort in the following truth: he may not be able to see the end result, but Jesus knows all” (ref#34, Aug 14th PM).

FATHER, let ____ “be content to know only what You choose to reveal” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, Aug 14th PM). And, content (him/her) with You.

THE JOY OF PLANTING AND WATERING

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 6.46.31 AM…FATHER, You have created ____ for fellowshipping with You in Your work. You have fashioned (him/her) to experience the most joy when (he/she) is with You. By steady attention to obedience, natural lives can be turned into spiritual lives (ref#118, p61-62). The farmer joyfully plants anticipating the harvest. Cause ____ who plants to anticipate Your spiritual harvest.

Your powerful Word dawns on men like the morning light—like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning—like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth (2 Sam 23:4). This Word comes through the SPIRIT, LORD, put His words on ____’s tongue (2 Sam 23:2).

Make it, FATHER, ____’s joy to be faithful to You as You make (his/her) way blameless (2 Sam 22:33) and righteous (2 Sam 22:21). You will reward (him/her) with joy when (his/her) work is faithful to You (ref#56, p460, [2 Sam 22:21-25]).

By working in union with You ____ can be bold declaring the Gospel, without error or impurity—having no desire to deceive. Make it (his/her) longing to be approved by You (1 Thes 2:2-4)—desiring not approval for (himself/herself) or from men.

FATHER, make ____ gentle, and affectionately desirous that men hear plainly the Gospel (1 Thes 2:7-8). With You, (he/she) will exhort and encourage and charge men to walk in a manner worthy of You—calling them into Your kingdom and glory (1 Thes 2:12).

Also, FATHER, make the ones You regenerate ____’s hope and joy and crown of boasting (1 Thes 2:19). Joining with You, FATHER, in prayer for the ones awakened to Your free gift of grace, cause it to be (his/her) greatest joy. For (he/she) knows that the ones You draw to Yourself through (him/her), will remain in faith and love (1 Thes 3:6) and continue standing fast (1 Thes 3:8). What joy (he/she) will feel for their sake and will long to continue in fellowship with them so that (he/she) may supply what is lacking in their faith and they may supply what is lacking in (his/her) faith (1 Thes 3:9-10).

SIN NOT LEADING TO DEATH

Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 5.32.48 AM“There may be those…in sin that there may seem to be…almost no ground of hope. They may have cast off all the restraints of religion, of morality, of decency;…they may have been professors of religion, and now may have renounced the faith of the gospel altogether, but still, while there is life it is our duty to pray for them,…” Barne’s Notes (ref#16, [1 John 5:16])

FATHER, I am thinking about ____. Your Apostle John says, at the end of his first epistle, there is sin that leads to death and sin that does not lead to death (1 John 5:16). I do not know where ____ is in (his/her) spiritual life, because I only see the outward signs, but, I pray for (him/her) with a “hope and expectation of success” Matthew Poole (ref#21, p941, [1 John 5:16]).

You say, You will give me what I ask for in 1 John 5:15. And follow it with: “If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life…” (1 John 5:16 ESV).

Oh FATHER, how I want to believe that ____ is sinning in a way that does not lead to death so that You will give (him/her) life. I pray ____’s sin is not an obstinate sin, thus incurable (ref#21, p941, [1 John 5:16]). I pray ____ is not refusing Your diagnosis of (his/her) need and Your offer of forgiveness (ref#56, p1828, [1 John 1:10]). I pray ____ is not chronically disobedient to Your commands (ref#125, p2437, [1 John 5:16]) for continuing in such a state leads to permanent death.

Sin that does not lead “to death is sin for which forgiveness is possible because (1) forgiveness is sought” and (2) You, FATHER, are “willing to grant it” ESV Study Bible (ref#125, p2437, [1 John 5:16]).

Turn ____ from (his/her) wandering, evil course; save (him/her) from death (James 5:20). FATHER, nothing is impossible with You (Luke 1:37). Grant ____, repentance that (he/she) may escape from the snare of the devil, for (he/she) now is captured by him to do his will (2 Tim 2:25-26).
