THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVINCES AND CONVICTS

“No Christian has a right to be uncertain about his or her salvation; the Holy Spirit has been given in order that we might be certain…” Martyn Lloyd-Jones (ref#189, Feb 14th).

FATHER, Your HOLY SPIRIT grants me an interest in reading the Bible as well as revealing it in such a way that I spiritually understand it. If I am not a true Christian I will not possess the SPIRIT and therefore cannot ever know beyond a shadow of doubt whether I am going to heaven.

And the scary part is that without the SPIRIT I can will myself to read Scripture and assimilate its truth into my life. But my actions will flow out of my human desires without having any idea what would be Your desires.

I must have the SPIRIT for He convicts me of sin. “Seek the inward witness of the Spirit…that your heart has been convinced of sin, that you have renounced your own righteousness and have fled to the Lord Jesus Christ, and that your soul is breathing after personal holiness” Octavius Winslow (ref#135, Feb 3rd).

“We come to Christ for salvation after the Spirit has convinced us of sin…” Martyn Lloyd-Jones (ref#189, Feb 14th). “…if He has not done it for you, if you value your own soul, ask Him to do it” Martyn Lloyd-Jones (ref#189, Feb 14th).

ASSURANCES THROUGH THE BIBLE

“The Bible is the most definite book that was ever written….The Bible is definite about salvation; so definite that if a man is saved and knows his Bible, and you put to him the question, ‘Are you saved,’ he will reply, in all humility and yet with equal confidence, ‘Yes, God in His infinite mercy and condescension has saved even me.’” R. A. Torrey (ref#223, p111).

FATHER, Your Bible has a lot to say to a true Christian as far as assuring him You will always love and never leave him. True Christians have an insatiable interest in Scripture. It is their “bread of life,” for it one does not read Scripture one cannot build his faith to the point of “knowing.”

A sample of the way GOD speaks to His children through His written Word:

“You did not choose me, but I chose you…” (John 15:16 ESV).

“…Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you” (Jer 31:3 AMP).

“And I will betroth you to me forever. I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And you shall know the Lord” (Hos 2:19-20 ESV).

“(You) shall…dwell beneath my shadow; (you) shall flourish like the grain; (you) shall blossom like the vine; (your) fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon” (Hos 14:7 ESV) (parentheses mine).
