CONFESSION

THE NOTION OF DIVINE CONTROL

…FATHER. “The Bible declares that an infinitely good God is in the middle of our most painful experiences…” Paul David Tripp (ref#5, p143).

“…how astonished we would be to find that in the bitterest draught that ever touched our lips, the principal ingredient was love! That love saw the discipline needful, love selected the chastisement sent, love appointed the instrument by which it should come, love arranged the circumstances by which it should take place, love fixed the time when it should transpire, and love heard the sigh, and saw the tear, and marked the anguish, and never for one moment withdrew its beaming eye from the sufferer” Octavius Winslow (ref#61, Oct 7th).

FATHER, I long to stay in Your presence. How easy it is when the tribulations come to lean on my own resources. At the sign of tribulation my notion is to take action using my strength to remove myself from its grip as speedily as possible. I derive help from myself and from others forgetting You, FATHER; I not only forget Your strength to provide for me but also I never consider Your good purposes for the trial.

Aid me quickly so I gain a notion of Your divine control. When perplexities press make the realization come naturally: “God is my Father, He loves me, I shall never think of anything He will forget, why should I worry” Oswald Chambers (ref#7, July 16th)? Allow me, FATHER, to rest in perfect confidence in You (ref#7, July 16th).

PSALM 66

I will make a joyful noise to You, GOD—

sing the glory of Your name—

give You glorious praise!

say, “How awesome are Your deeds” (Ps 66:1-3).

Great is Your power;

all the earth worships You;

they sing praises to You;

we all sing praises to Your name (Ps 66:3-4).

I see what You have done;

You are splendid in Your deeds;

You rule by Your might forever—

keeping watch on the nations (Ps 66:5,7).

Though You have tested me and tried me—

bringing me into Your net—

laying afflictions on my back—yet…

You have brought me out to a place of abundance (Ps 66:10-12).

I shall bless You—

letting the sound of my praise be heard.

Come and hear, all You who fear GOD,

and I will tell You what He has done for me (Ps 66:8,16).

If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,

You LORD, would not have listened.

But, truly You have listened;

You have given heed to the voice of my prayer (Ps 66:18-19).

I cry aloud to You,

high praise is on my tongue.

Blessed be my GOD—

He has not removed His steadfast love from me (Ps 66:17, 20)!

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“Our petitions urge wants that are immediate, obvious, and urgent. We cannot see deep enough or far enough to know what is our real need. Most people would like good health, home comfort, congenial conditions, happy friendships, a little more money, and better success;…” Samuel Chadwick (ref#4, p60).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You are alive and true and genuine (1 Thes 1:9), I will wait for You.

Because wisdom and might are Yours; because You change the times and the seasons, because You remove kings and set up kings (Dan 2:20-21), I will wait for You.

Because You reveal the deep and secret things and know what is in the darkness and the light dwells with You (Dan 2:22), I will wait for You.

ANTICIPATING DEATH

…FATHER, support ____ by preparing (him/her) for death. I pray (he/she) anticipate that blessed moment when You send not an enemy, but a friend to open the cage that imprisons (his/her) spirit. Grant (him/her) the ability to look forward to the time when (he/she) escapes to eternal glory (ref#61, Oct 9th).

FATHER, be preparing (him/her) day by day for its realization. Build up in (him/her) a waiting joy for the happy moment when You release (him/her) from (his/her) body of sin and death and usher (him/her) into the full enjoyment of eternal life (ref#61, Oct 9th). In (his/her) inactivity may (he/she) know You.

BOUNDLESS AND LIMITLESS

How great are Your signs, O LORD (Dan 4:3).

They are inestimable—

they cannot be properly appreciated (ref#110, p690);

they are incredible (ref#110, p684).

LORD, how mighty are Your works (Dan 4:3).

They cannot be measured;

they are too great—

simply invaluable (ref#110, p690).

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom (Dan 4:3).

You are immanent—

present throughout the universe (ref#110, p674)—

boundless and limitless (ref#110, p1453).

Your dominion endures to all generations (Dan 4:3).

You love with an everlasting love (Jer 31:3);

You continue forever in faithfulness (Jer 31:3);

You are undefinable (ref#110, p1453).

CONFESSION

SOLOMON’S PRAYER

…FATHER, there is no GOD like You in heaven above or on the earth beneath keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart (1 Kings 8:23). I pray Your eyes be open day and night looking toward me to listen to my cry (2 Chron 6:19-20).

You have promised relief for me from the hardships caused by my sin if I turn to You in humility and prayer (ref#56, p606, [2 Chron 7:14]). So, act and judge me, condemn me if I am guilty by bringing my conduct on my own head; but vindicate me if I’m righteous by rewarding me according to my righteousness (1 Kings 8:32).

If I pray and acknowledge Your name and turn from my sin when You afflict me, then hear in heaven and forgive my sin (1 Kings 8:35-36). Listen to my pleas and when You hear, forgive (1 Kings 8:30).

Whatever plague, whatever sickness, whatever prayer, whatever plea I make, knowing the affliction of my own heart, hear in heaven and forgive and act and render to me according to all my ways. (1 Kings 8:37-39). Act on my behalf, so I might fear You all the days I live (1 Kings 8:40).

When I sin against You and You are angry and give me to an enemy, remember to maintain my cause and forgive me when I turn my heart and repent saying, “I have sinned and have acted perversely and wickedly” (1 Kings 8:45-47).

Forgive all my transgressions that I have committed against You; grant me compassion in the sight of my enemies, that they may have pity and be merciful to me (I Kings 8:50).

Let Your eyes be open to my pleas giving ear to them whenever I call to You, for You have separated me from the peoples of the earth to be Your heir (1 Kings 8:52-53).

Do not leave me or forsake me that I might incline my heart to You, to walk in all Your ways and to keep Your commandments—Your statutes—Your rules (1 Kings 8:57-58). Maintain my cause as each day requires that the whole earth may know that You are the LORD GOD and there is no other (1 Kings 8:59-60). And so, let my heart therefore be wholly true to You (1 Kings 8:61).

Because no one is a ruler and a teacher like You (Job 36:22), I will wait for You.

Because You are a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity (Prov 2:7), I will wait for You.

ADVERSE PROVIDENCES

…FATHER, Charles Spurgeon once said, “Faith never prospers as well as when all things are against her. Tempests are her trainers, and lightning is her illuminator” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, Nov 12th AM). I pray for ____ that this trial strengthen (his/her) faith. Even if (he/she) thinks (his/her) faith is failing, give (him/her) an awareness that JESUS will not allow it ultimately.

Direct ____ toward considering Your glory and grace and to identify (himself/herself) as Your child. Cause ____ to note how more inclined (he/she) is to pray in this circumstance— how much more alive Scripture becomes—how much easier it is to worship. May (he/she) note how (his/her) strength has increased—how easily (he/she) finds love in the midst of rejection—wisdom in the face of foolishness (ref#5, p157).

Assist ____, FATHER, to contemplate how involved You are in (his/her) life which shows Your great care for (him/her). You are with (him/her) in this hardship. You have arranged it and measured it out.

____’s present pain did not come by accident, it was not a mistake, or brought on by an enemy. Help ____ trace (his/her) adverse providence back to the foot of Your throne. Overwhelm (him/her) with Your majesty and power. I pray that You enable ____ to comprehend Your absolute control over all that is happening to (him/her) (ref#151).
