SUPPLICATION

GENERAL TRIBULATION

[We all can think of a Christian sister or brother experiencing so much affliction they may not be able to pray for themselves. Here’s an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

GOD’S ANSWER TO JOB

FATHER, answer ____’s supplications like You did Job’s. Job knew You directed His life. He had no intention of terminating His relationship with You. His thoughts were like Peter’s when he was given the opportunity to leave Your relationship. He said, “Lord, to whom shall I go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

____, too, would never think of leaving You, but, like Job, You have given (him/her) this providence that (he/d/she’d) like, at least, an explanation. We fall naturally into questioning Your purposes. FATHER, if ____ grumbles and (his/her) prayers are introspective show (him/her) Your majesty.

For four chapters, in the book of Job, FATHER, You revealed Your matchless ability to run Your creation. Even after two chapters when Job put his hand over his mouth in humility, You continued making him see Your greatness and his littleness for two more chapters (Job 38-41). More and more You made him realize he was very wrong to question Your providences to him.

GOD, reveal Yourself to ____ in such a way that (he/she) repents in dust and ashes (Job 42:6)—comprehending, that (he/she) speaks to You without knowledge (Job 38:2).

If You speak to ____ like You did Job, (he/she) will not need any verification that You hear (him/her) and You will answer (him/her). (His/Her) faith will become spiritual sight. Instead of anxiously awaiting an answer to (his/her) supplications, (he/she) will be spellbound at Your presence. And in Your presence (he/she) will “know” You answer (his/her) requests in a most perfect way.

Impress Yourself upon (him/her) now like clay under the seal. You laid the foundations of the earth—determined its measurements—contained the sea and prescribed its limits (Job 38:4,5,8,10). FATHER, thank You for this short review of Your greatness. Surely You know best what to do with ____’s difficult situation.

UNQUENCHABLE

Your throne, O GOD, is forever and ever (Ps 45:6)

for You are perpetual—

continuing indefinitely,

and eternally permanent (ref#110, p1006).

You are unquenchable (ref#110, p1462)

and cannot be emptied or used up;

You are tireless (ref#110, p691)—

unable to be subdued or overcome (ref#110, p1462).

CHRIST, You are all and in all (Col 3:11)—

existing outside the experience of man.

You exceed normal bounds (ref#110, p1344)

and certainly are inexhaustible (ref#110, p691).

For You are supernatural (ref#110, p1344)—

vast, extensive and great—

You are not confined or limited (ref#110 p1284)

but forever immortal (ref#110, p675).

CONFESSION

PREMEDITATION

…FATHER, I tend to create scenarios in my head—planning how I want a situation to turn out. Even though You have regenerated me, giving me a moral character that desires to magnify You, I still carry in me a natural tendency to make my own self the hero of my thoughts. When I make plans I have my self-interest in mind even as I fanaticize about doing great Christian things.

You created me incapable of perceiving how to glorify You. Instead, what You have created me capable of is to grasp the knowledge of JESUS CHRIST and Him crucified (1 Cor 2:2). Presuming I know anything more about Your ways is pure pompousness.

Let me voice the truth to You, FATHER: I stumble through life, moving from pride to pride, oblivious, while You go about Your business. You simply make my blunders work out for Your good. No wonder You cause my premeditations never to happen.

FATHER, I desire to occupy my mind with remembrances of You, since You have hidden Your work from me as You do it. You pass by producing miracles but I don’t recognize them. You are in the earthquake and fire but I only come to know what You’ve done after the fact. As You did for Moses, You show me Your glory after You pass by and remove Your hand that covers me (Ex 33:18-23).

I ask that You erect a “stop” sign in my spirit when I start with premeditation. Empower me to pull my thoughts away from myself and on to reviewing what I have recently seen looking behind You. Open my eyes to the wonderful things CHRIST has done so that my wisdom will perish and my discernment will be overpowered (Isa 29:14) and I won’t occupy my mind with premeditation—seeing how worthless such is.

PRAISE TO THE SPIRIT

To the SPIRIT of GOD, I exert my best praise:

You awoke the first thrill of life in my soul,

showed me my guilt and sealed my pardon.

You led me to CHRIST.

You inspire every breath of my life,

dwell in my heart—

give me Your healing sanctifying,

comforting, and restoring grace.

Praise for Your influence,

which no ingratitude has quenched.

Praise for Your patience,

which no backsliding has exhausted.

You renew my intellect,

sanctify my heart,

inhabit my body

awaken every pulse of love.

I am a debtor to Your quickening mercy;

I owe You undivided and supreme affections.

To the SPIRIT of GOD,

I exert my best praise (ref#61, Sept 5th).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“The very powers of darkness are paralyzed by prayer. No wonder Satan tries to keep our minds fussy in active work till we cannot think to pray” Oswald Chambers (ref#23, p397).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You see my paths and count all my steps (Job 31:4), I will wait for You.

Because You know the way that I take, because You have concern for it, because You appreciate and pay attention to my way (Job 23:10), I will wait for You.

Because You hear my supplication and receive my prayer (Ps 6:9), I will wait for You.

NON CHRISTIAN Resisters

[We all have friends and family that do not want anything to do with Christianity so it is up to us to pray for their salvation. Here’s an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

THE SELF-INDULGENT

FATHER, because JESUS, in His priestly role makes continual intercession I bow before Him. Compel ____ to draw close to You through CHRIST, for it is CHRIST who is able to save completely (Heb 7:25). May Your SPIRIT perform His sanctifying work in (him/her) (1 Pet 1:2).

____ satisfies (himself/herself) with adulterous pleasure. Like Israel, (he/she) loves raison cakes—delicacies that appeal “to the senses, and gratifies the carnal impulses and desires” Keil and Delitzsch Commentary on the Old Testament (ref#68, [Hos 3:1]).

(He/She) appears to be living a self-gravitating, dissolute life rejecting what (he/she) knows of You and choosing the way of self-discovery—deciding (himself/herself) what is right and wrong (ref#123, p31,33).

“God…never designed that the…immoral creature should sip its bliss at a lower fountain than Himself….Love to God…forms the grand requirement…of the divine law….no opposition of rival interest can lessen the obligation of every creature…to love…God with all his heart…” Octavius Winslow (ref#61, May 18th).

Even if ____ would turn and decide on (his/her) own to do good and make an effort to follow You, it would do nothing for (his/her) salvation. ____’s good deeds will not move You to accept (him/her) into Your kingdom. My prayer is not for ____ to amend (his/her) rebellious ways, but for You to call (him/her) to Yourself (Rom 9:16). Call to (him/her) in such a way that (he/she) will answer.

STUPENDOUS

FATHER, let me speak of Your awesome deeds (Ps 145:6).

They are outstanding and illustrious—

distinguished and famous (ref#110, p673).

They are beyond debate (ref#110, p1456).

Your deeds are beyond the range of my perception—

outside my senses.

They are supersensible (ref#110, p1344),

and undisputable—beyond arguing (ref#110, p1456).

The LORD my GOD is great (Deut 7:21)—

astonishingly great.

You are stupendous—overwhelming (ref#110, p1331)—

deserving glory (ref#110, p575).

LORD GOD, You are my GOD (Deut 7:21).

You are resplendent—dazzling—

full of brightness (ref#110, p1144)—

splendid, magnificent, and glorious (ref#110, p575).

CONFESSION

REPENTANCE AND REST

“For thus said the Lord God…’In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.’…” (Isa 30:15 ESV).

FATHER, in regards to sin, I easily find myself resolving to do better next time instead of resting in Your presence (ref#100, p94). I want the opportunity to get it right. My first reaction to my sin is that it’s just a mistake or a momentary weakness that I can fix with my own abilities.

“But the moment we repent and put the blame where it belongs, on ourselves, the all-availing blood of Jesus comes into view on our behalf before God, and He then is pleased for Christ’s sake…” Roy and Revel Hession (ref#100, p 91, 92).

FATHER, quickly bring me to confession. Give me the ability to not only admit my guilt but admit it is impossible for me to do any better. I must rest as the sinner under CHRIST’s blood until it pleases You to meet with me again (ref#100, p95).

FYI. My sin causes a rift in our relationship. Even the smallest sin triggers the serious consequence of lost fellowship with You. FATHER, move me to Calvary—to JESUS—glimpsing what my sin cost Him. It isn’t anything I do but His Blood that moves You (ref#97, p81).

My responsibility is to rest—rest because I have returned and You have forgiven—rest because our fellowship needs restored—rest because You need to instruct me what my next steps should be (ref#100, p92). Train me in the truth: You are holy, any sin is serious, and I must bow to You, confess, and rest until I sense Your strength filling me again.

I SOUGHT THE LORD, AND AFTERWARD I KNEW

“I sought the Lord, and afterward I knew

He moved my soul to seek him, seeking me;

It was not I that found, O Savior true,

No, I was found of thee.

“Thou didst reach forth thy hand and mine enfold;

I walked and sank not on the storm-vexed sea,

‘Twas not so much that I on thee took hold,

As thou, dear Lord, on me.

“I find, I walk, I love, but, O the whole

Of love is but my answer, Lord, to thee;

For thou wert long beforehand with my soul,

Always thou lovedst me [anonymous, 1904],” Systematic Theology (ref#63, p708).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“We seek God’s gifts: God wants to give us HIMSELF first. We think of prayer as the power to draw down good gifts from heaven; Jesus is the means to draw ourselves up to God. We want to stand at the door and cry; Jesus would have us first enter in and realize that we are friends and children” Andrew Murray (ref#19, TWELFTH LESSON).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because Your eyes are on me and Your ears are open to my prayers (1 Pet 3:12), I will wait for You.

Because You hear when I cry for help and deliver me out of all my distress and troubles (Ps 34:17), I will wait for You.

Because You perform that which You have planned for me (Job 23:14), I will wait for You.
