CONFESSION

WORKING OUT MY OWN SALVATION

screen-shot-2017-02-21-at-1-58-12-pm…FATHER, move me to work out my own salvation—but not on my own. Keep me always accepting what You give. I wish to let You set me apart.

“The one marvelous secret of a holy life lies not in imitating Jesus, but in letting the perfections of Jesus manifest themselves in my mortal flesh” Oswald Chambers (ref#7, July 23rd).

FATHER, Your mystery of sanctification is JESUS. All His sinless perfection You pour into me. And as You pour, I continually change slowly and surely into holiness (2 Cor 13:4).

If there is any effort on my part to be exerted it is to seek to know CHRIST better—“in His divine nature, in His human relationship, in His finished work, in His death, in His resurrection, in His present glorious intercession, and in His future royal advent” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, Jan 4th AM). The reason You have made me one with JESUS is so His disposition will rule my disposition (ref#7, Feb 8th).

This “working out my own salvation” is to let You, FATHER, more quickly change me. Allow me to experience the closeness of JESUS, FATHER, so that His presence pushes anxious thoughts away that I may see clearly Your direction before me.

TO THE KING ETERNAL

screen-shot-2017-02-21-at-1-54-24-pmYou are LORD, the everlasting GOD,

the Creator of the ends of the earth,

You do not faint or grow weary;

Your understanding is unsearchable (Isa 40:28).

You give power to the faint,

energizing the weary,

and when I lack might,

You increase my strength (Isa 40:29).

When I wait,

You renew my strength;

I shall mount up with wings like eagles,

spreading my wings and soaring (Isa 40:31).

I shall run and not be weary—

never getting tired.

I shall walk and not faint—

never lagging behind (Isa 40:31).

To the King of ages,

immortal, invisible,

the only God, be honor

and glory forever and ever. Amen (1 Tim 1:17).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“Poverty of spirit enters into true praying. ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ ‘The poor’ means paupers, beggars, those who live on the bounty of others, who live by begging.  Christ’s people live by asking. ‘Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath’” E. M. Bounds (ref#54, p32).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because righteousness and justice is the foundation of Your throne (Ps 97:2), I will wait for You.

Because You give skillful and godly wisdom and from Your mouth comes knowledge and understanding (Prov 2:6), I will wait for You.

Because Your mercy and loving-kindness endures forever (1 Chron 16:34), I will wait for You.

YOU ALONE

screen-shot-2017-02-20-at-3-55-05-pmTo the only GOD, be glory now and forever (Jude 25).

You are beyond experience—

transcendent and superior (ref#110, p1419),

excellent and important (ref#110, p1410).

To the only GOD, be majesty now and forever (Jude 25).

You are the foremost and greatest—

the choicest—the very best—

You are uppermost (ref#110, p1410).

To the only GOD, be authority now and forever (Jude 25).

You have a meaningful manner of speaking (ref#110, p1218)—

unencumbered (ref#110, p1456).

You alone are the Most High over all the earth (Ps 83:18).

To the only GOD, be dominion now and forever (Jude 25).

You are first in order—the zenith (ref#110, p1410)—

unconquerable and indomitable (ref#110, p689).

You are transcendent (ref#110, p1419).

HUMILITY

screen-shot-2017-02-20-at-3-46-01-pm“The head must be bowed low to the dust to admit that we are no better than what Jesus had to become for us” Roy and Revel Hession (ref#100, p77).

FATHER, let me daily review my total inability to help myself. You do not help me occasionally, like picking up a just-learning-to-walk child when he falls, no, I am in the troughs of an enemy who labors day and night to devour me (1 Pet 5:8). I need to envision myself daily in the middle of a ring of fire needing You to reach Your hand down and pluck me out.

“The bedrock in Jesus Christ’s kingdom is poverty, not possession; weakness, not strength of will; infirmity of character, not goodness; a sense of absolute poverty, not decisions for Christ…(Matt 5:3)”  Oswald Chambers (ref#83, p90).

“If we grow down in humility and up in worship—leave off all sin and the diverting pleasures of this world and persevere because we desire Christ supremely—we could not fathom doing anything to grieve One so infinitely glorious—One who saves to the uttermost and ever lives to intercede one as vile as me” Dan Cummings (ref#141, April 9, 2006).

GOD’S CARE FOR ME

screen-shot-2017-02-20-at-3-42-00-pmCOMPASSIONATE FATHER, You have made me in the womb (Job 31:15).

You know the way that I take; You have concern for it,

You pay attention to my way (Job 23:10).

You care about my going out and coming in (Ps 139:2).

You hear my supplication, receiving my prayer (Ps 6:9).

You see my way and count all my steps (Job 31:4).

You perform that which You have planned for me (Job 23:14).

You daily bear me up (Ps 68:19).

You turn my mourning into dancing (Ps 30:11).

You bring me near to dwell in Your courts (Ps 65:4).

You make Your face to shine upon me (Ps 67:1).

You put a new song in my mouth (Ps 40:3).

You cover all my sin (Ps 85:2).

You deliver me from death (Ps 68:20).

You redeem my life from the pit (Ps 103:4).

You withdraw all Your wrath (Ps 85:3).

You satisfy me with good (Ps 103:5).

You heal all my diseases (Ps 103:3).

You hear my voice and pleas (Ps 116:1).

You crown me with love and with mercy (Ps 103:4).

What shall I render to You, O LORD

for all Your benefits to me?

I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving

and forever call on Your name (Ps 116:12,17).

SUPPLICATION

GENERAL CHRISTIAN

[Because we are Christians and live in the world we will always need prayer for our walk and for witnessing to others about CHRIST. Here’s an opportunity to pray for others or even ourselves. Fill their name or your name in the blanks.]

HOW DOES JESUS SPEAK?

screen-shot-2017-02-18-at-4-49-14-pm“The head is where God’s will is understood, but it is never the source of His will. The will of God originates in Himself, Who by His Holy Spirit reveals it to the spirit of man” Watchman Nee (ref#101, p79).

FATHER, I thank You for the SPIRIT, who impresses ____ with the words of JESUS through the Bible and then illuminates those very words in the Bible. You do not speak to (him/her) through one without the other (ref#119, p51).

“According to Jesus, the Holy Spirit would first lead the disciples to remember and record His teaching in what we call the New Testament. Then He would guide Christ’s followers into increasing knowledge of the truth on the basis of that written revelation” James Montgomery Boice (ref#119, p31).

FATHER, prohibit ____ from courting the desire to search through the Bible for some precept to obey. Instead, guide (him/her) to making (his/her) life be so in touch with You that the HOLY SPIRIT can continually bring some word from JESUS and apply it to (his/her) circumstances (ref#118, p16).

UNSURPASSED

screen-shot-2017-02-18-at-4-40-20-pm…FATHER, You possess power and glory—

And the victory and majesty (1 Chron 19:11).

You have the highest authority;

You are Ruler and Master—LORD (ref#110, p798)!

All that is in the heavens and

in the earth is Yours (1 Chron 29:11).

You are self-sufficient and independent—

getting along without help (ref#110, p1219)

You are exalted as head above all (1 Chron 29:11).

You cannot be exceeded;

You are unsurpassed (ref#110, p1464).

You bring to fulfillment (ref#110, p1218).

Yours is the scepter of uprightness (Heb 1:8).

You hold the title of Sovereign;

You prevail and predominate—

You reign (ref#110, p1131).

CONFESSION

IMITATING MY ELDER BROTHER, JESUS

screen-shot-2017-02-18-at-4-20-18-pm…FATHER, in Your Word You command many things of me. But if I look at Your commands as just something I need to do I am in the wrong frame of mind. I do not say, “I believe in JESUS” and then add hard work to my faith.

“Martin Luther’s old formula still sums things up nicely: ‘We are saved by faith alone [not our works], but not by faith that remains alone.’ Nothing we do can merit God’s grace and favor, we can only believe that he has given it to us in Jesus Christ and receive it by faith. But if we truly believe and trust in the one who sacrificially served us, it changes us into people who sacrificially serve God and our neighbors” Timothy Keller (ref#123, p123-124).

“Desire without knowledge is not good,…” (Prov 19:2 NRSV). “Sincerity and energy by themselves miss the mark (Rom 10:2)” The Reformation Study Bible (ref#56, p903 [Prov 19:2]).

“Religion operates on the principle of ‘I obey therefore I am accepted by God.’ The basic operating principle of the gospel is ‘I am accepted by God through the work of Jesus Christ—therefore I obey’” Timothy Keller (ref#123, p114).

Religion is “the default mode of my heart.” I have to deliberately and repeatedly set my heart to gospel-mode (ref#123, p114-115). I do that not by willfully doing good works but by feeding on the Gospel, digesting it so it becomes my motivating energy.

When the Apostle Paul gives a command, he doesn’t pressure directly on the will or on emotions but draws his listeners back to CHRIST and the work He did. As the hours go by in the day, if I keep thinking about how CHRIST lived out His life, I will soon realize how much His sacrificial love did for me—I will soon want to similarly sacrifice for others—be a comparable “elder brother.” In this mind-set I will complete jobs not to get them “checked off” but to do them because it is a joy to “do” for the One I love.

“Our problems arise largely because we don’t continually return to the gospel to work it in and live it out” (ref#123, p119). Let me repeat that: “Our problems arise largely because we don’t continually return to the gospel to work it in and live it out” Timothy Keller (ref#123, p119).

Looking through the lens of the Gospel my responsibilities named in Scripture become not heavy burdens but privileges to enjoy. There is no higher privilege than to work and suffer for CHRIST (ref#10, p244). It doesn’t get any better than that.
