PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“We seek God’s gifts: God wants to give us HIMSELF first. We think of prayer as the power to draw down good gifts from heaven; Jesus is the means to draw ourselves up to God. We want to stand at the door and cry; Jesus would have us first enter in and realize that we are friends and children” Andrew Murray (ref#19, TWELFTH LESSON).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because Your eyes are on me and Your ears are open to my prayers (1 Pet 3:12), I will wait for You.

Because You hear when I cry for help and deliver me out of all my distress and troubles (Ps 34:17), I will wait for You.

Because You perform that which You have planned for me (Job 23:14), I will wait for You.

SUPPLICATION

CHRISTIAN

[Because we are Christians and live in the world we will always need prayer for our walk and for witnessing to others about CHRIST. Here’s an opportunity to pray for others or even ourselves. Fill their name or your name in the blanks.]

TALK OF CHRIST NOT PERSONAL EXPERIENCES

“Salvation is all God’s thought, not man’s; therefore it is an unfathomable abyss” Oswald Chambers (ref#7, May 5th).

It is a common activity to speak of spiritual ideas as just that, ideas—facts that the listener can add or not add to his personal morals. FATHER, enable, ____ to be true to JESUS CHRIST and not a doctrine of Christianity (ref#118, p82). Energize ____ to keep the awesome fear of GOD in (his/her) witness by speaking only about the Person, JESUS CHRIST.

Constrain ____ to not speak of how one can be saved from hell or made moral and pure. Such will come automatically with redemption. Impassion ____ to speak simply of the good news of JESUS CHRIST. If (his/her) words bring (his/her) hearers to judgment then (he/she) has done (his/her) part. The SPIRIT will do the rest.

SOUND JUDGMENT

Your righteousness is like the mountains (Ps 36:6).

You have the power to judge rightly;

You are wisdom—

following the soundest course of action (ref#110, p1533).

Your judgments are like the great deep (Ps 36:6);

You are judicious and wise (ref#110, p731)—

forthright and direct (ref#110, p531)—

showing sound decisions (ref#110, p731).

You are justified in Your verdict (Ps 51:4)—

having and applying fair rulings (ref#110, p731).

You are deliberate—

tendentious (ref#110, p1378).

You are faultless in Your judgment (Ps 51:4).

You are not unjust or unfair,

nor variable or fluctuating—

nor equal to anyone else (ref#110, p1456).

CONFESSION

BONDSERVANT

“Just as it is the disposition of the Lamb that bestows upon the blood its power, so it is only as we are willing to be partakers of the same disposition of the Lamb, that we shall know its full power in our lives. And we may be partakers of His disposition, for it has been made transferable to us by His death” (Phil 2:5; 1 Cor 2:16) Roy Hession (ref#97, p95,96).

FATHER, that I might be a bondservant of CHRIST who is Your bondservant. This means I will be treated as You treated Your Son—serving Your will and experiencing “the malice of men” Roy Hession (ref#97, p85).

FATHER, You made me in the first place to be Your bondservant so that there is nothing I can boast in because this is what I have been created for (ref#97, p86). A slave doesn’t boast, he just does his assigned work.

“’Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, “Come at once and recline at table”? Will he not rather say to him, “Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink”? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded?   So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, “We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty”'” (Luke 17:7-10 ESV).

When I catch myself feeling good because of my Christian activities, deflate my pride by calling to my mind the above verse. It’s serious business to steal Your glory, O GOD.

“…we have no right and no appeal, where we are the absolute property of our Master, to be treated and disposed of just as He wishes” Roy Hession (ref#97, p84).

HYMN OF INCARNATION

“He, even when he subsisted in the form of God,

Did not…cling to His prerogative of equality with God:

Nay, tenantless of all that glory,

He assumed the form of a bondslave,

“And appeared in the likeness of man.

So was He found on earth as a man in outward seeming,

And abased Himself in rendering submission,

even to the death—A death upon the Cross!

“Because He stooped so low, God uplifted Him very high,

And hath freely given Him The Name—

The Name that is above every name, decreeing

‘In the name of Jesus shall every knee bend in prayer,

“Alike of dwellers in heaven, on earth, in the underworld,

And every tongue shall utter this confession,

‘Jesus the Messiah is Lord!’

So rendering glory to God the Father’” Arthur S. Way (ref#38, p155-156 [Phil 2:6-11]).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“If no answer comes, we are not to…suppose that it is not God’s will to give an answer. No; there must be something in the prayer that is not as God would have it…It is far easier to the flesh to submit without the answer than to yield itself to be searched and purified by the Spirit, until it has learnt to pray the prayer of faith” Andrew Murray (ref#19, FIFTH LESSON).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You send the Counselor to represent CHRIST and act on His behalf (John 14:26), I will wait for You.

Because the SPIRIT will show me what is true (John 14:17), I will wait for You.

Because the SPIRIT will teach me everything (John 14:26), I will wait for You.

Because the SPIRIT will always be with me and help me (John 14:16), I will wait for You.

SUPPLICATION

SICKNESS – LIFE THREATENING

[The majority of our prayers concern physical health. We all know someone who is dealing with a life-ending disease. Here is an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

THE AFFLICTED SOUL UNABLE TO THINK

FATHER, ____ may be too deeply absorbed in sorrow, or too weakened by disease and racked with pain to muster prayers to You. Many situations make ____ unfit for concentrated spiritual thought. But, sweet JESUS intercedes in (his/her) stead (ref#61, Feb 10th).

“…when human sympathy and power are exhausted, Jesus has ‘entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God’ (Heb 9:24)” Octavius Winslow (ref#61, Feb 10th).

Pray for ____, JESUS. When ____ in (his/her) affliction cannot think of You, aid (him/her) to know You are thinking of (him/her). You live to make intercession (Heb 7:25).
