PSALM 138

…FATHER, in the day I cried out,

You answered me.

You made me bold—

Mighty and resistant to temptation (Ps 138:3).

For though You are on high,

Yet You have respect for the lowly.

You bring me into fellowship with You.

But the proud you only recognize from a distance (Ps 138:6).

Though I walk in the midst of trouble,

You will revive me;

You will stretch forth Your hand against my enemies,

and Your right hand will save me (Ps 138:7).

You will perfect that which concerns me;

Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever —

forsake not the works of Your own hands.

Don’t abandon me, for You have made me (Ps 138:8).

I will praise You with my whole heart;

Before armies of angels I will sing.

I will worship You and praise Your name;

For Your lovingkindness, truth, and faithfulness

(Ps 138:1-2).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“It is more than asking, it is communion, fellowship, co-operation, identification, with God the Father and the Son by the Holy Spirit” Samuel Chadwick (ref#4, p61).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You work out everything in agreement with the counsel and design of Your own will (Eph 1:11), I will wait for You.

Because every good and perfect gift comes from You with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17), I will wait for You.

Because You satisfy the longing soul and fill the hungry soul with good (Ps 107:9), I will wait for You.

Because You know how to rescue the godly out of temptations and trials (2 Pet 2:9), I will wait for You.

SUPPLICATION

CHRISTIAN

[Because we are Christians and live in the world we will always need prayer for our walk and for witnessing to others about CHRIST. Here’s an opportunity to pray for others or even ourselves. Fill their name or your name in the blanks.]

A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS

…FATHER, I pray for ____ that (he/she) obey Your calling to be a priestly intercessor. (All Christians are called to be a kingdom of priests [Ex 19:6]). Attune (him/her) to be mindful of ones caught in transgression (Gal 6:1) that (he/she) will seek to restore them “by affectionate admonition, by faithful instruction, and by prayer” Barnes’ Notes (ref#16, [Gal 6:1]).

 Cause ____, FATHER, to live as a priest by fearing You and standing in awe of Your name (Mal 2:5). Keep true instruction in (his/her) mouth and assist (him/her) to walk with You in peace and uprightness. By such a walk (he/she) will turn many from iniquity (Mal 2:6). Impassion ____ to guard knowledge so that people should seek instruction from (him/her) (Mal 2:7).

Cause ____ to desire to labor to fill up that which is lacking in others (ref#67, [Gal 6:1]). Discharge (him/her) to offer up to You “spiritual sacrifices, not only of prayer and praise, but of devout affections and pious resolutions” which is the work of Your own SPIRIT in (him/her) (ref#18, [Ex 19:1-8]). Quicken (him/her) to offer up services acceptable to You through CHRIST (1 Pet 2:5).

“As Christ bears our burdens, so ought we to bear the burdens of our fellow-man. The law of Christ, which is our duty to fulfill, is the bearing of the cross. My brother’s burden which I must bear is not only his outward lot, his natural characteristics and gifts, but quite literally his sin. And the only way to bear that sin is by forgiving it in the power of the cross of Christ in which I now share. Thus the call to follow Christ always means a call to share the work of forgiving men their sins. Forgiveness is the Christlike suffering which it is the Christian duty to bear” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (ref#10, p90).

THANKSGIVING

INCONTESTABLE

You are GOD of gods and LORD of lords (Ps 8:1).

Incontestable—not to be contested,

unquestionable—not to be questioned,

You are sovereign (ref#110, p676).

You are in the heavens (Isa 29:14)—above others,

excelling and surpassing, having authority and power (ref#110, p1062).

You are effective in action (ref#110, p1056)—

potent and preeminent (ref#110, p1056, 1062).

You do as You please (Isa 29:14),

subsisting by and of Yourself,

without external agency.

You are self-existent (ref#110, p1218).

You are great and mighty—the awesome GOD (Ps 8:1).

You are imperial—

having supreme authority (ref#110, p676).

You cannot be compelled and are unconstrained (ref#110, p1453).

GOD of gods—

LORD of lords—

the great, the mighty—

the awesome GOD (Ps 8:1)!

CONFESSION

THE NOTION OF DIVINE CONTROL

…FATHER. “The Bible declares that an infinitely good God is in the middle of our most painful experiences…” Paul David Tripp (ref#5, p143).

“…how astonished we would be to find that in the bitterest draught that ever touched our lips, the principal ingredient was love! That love saw the discipline needful, love selected the chastisement sent, love appointed the instrument by which it should come, love arranged the circumstances by which it should take place, love fixed the time when it should transpire, and love heard the sigh, and saw the tear, and marked the anguish, and never for one moment withdrew its beaming eye from the sufferer” Octavius Winslow (ref#61, Oct 7th).

FATHER, I long to stay in Your presence. How easy it is when the tribulations come to lean on my own resources. At the sign of tribulation my notion is to take action using my strength to remove myself from its grip as speedily as possible. I derive help from myself and from others forgetting You, FATHER; I not only forget Your strength to provide for me but also I never consider Your good purposes for the trial.

Aid me quickly so I gain a notion of Your divine control. When perplexities press make the realization come naturally: “God is my Father, He loves me, I shall never think of anything He will forget, why should I worry” Oswald Chambers (ref#7, July 16th)? Allow me, FATHER, to rest in perfect confidence in You (ref#7, July 16th).

PSALM 66

I will make a joyful noise to You, GOD—

sing the glory of Your name—

give You glorious praise!

say, “How awesome are Your deeds” (Ps 66:1-3).

Great is Your power;

all the earth worships You;

they sing praises to You;

we all sing praises to Your name (Ps 66:3-4).

I see what You have done;

You are splendid in Your deeds;

You rule by Your might forever—

keeping watch on the nations (Ps 66:5,7).

Though You have tested me and tried me—

bringing me into Your net—

laying afflictions on my back—yet…

You have brought me out to a place of abundance (Ps 66:10-12).

I shall bless You—

letting the sound of my praise be heard.

Come and hear, all You who fear GOD,

and I will tell You what He has done for me (Ps 66:8,16).

If I had cherished iniquity in my heart,

You LORD, would not have listened.

But, truly You have listened;

You have given heed to the voice of my prayer (Ps 66:18-19).

I cry aloud to You,

high praise is on my tongue.

Blessed be my GOD—

He has not removed His steadfast love from me (Ps 66:17, 20)!

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“Our petitions urge wants that are immediate, obvious, and urgent. We cannot see deep enough or far enough to know what is our real need. Most people would like good health, home comfort, congenial conditions, happy friendships, a little more money, and better success;…” Samuel Chadwick (ref#4, p60).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You are alive and true and genuine (1 Thes 1:9), I will wait for You.

Because wisdom and might are Yours; because You change the times and the seasons, because You remove kings and set up kings (Dan 2:20-21), I will wait for You.

Because You reveal the deep and secret things and know what is in the darkness and the light dwells with You (Dan 2:22), I will wait for You.

SICKNESS Life-Threatening

[The majority of our prayers concern physical health. We all know someone who is dealing with a life-ending disease. Here is an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

ANTICIPATING DEATH

…FATHER, support ____ by preparing (him/her) for death. I pray (he/she) anticipate that blessed moment when You send not an enemy, but a friend to open the cage that imprisons (his/her) spirit. Grant (him/her) the ability to look forward to the time when (he/she) escapes to eternal glory (ref#61, Oct 9th).

FATHER, be preparing (him/her) day by day for its realization. Build up in (him/her) a waiting joy for the happy moment when You release (him/her) from (his/her) body of sin and death and usher (him/her) into the full enjoyment of eternal life (ref#61, Oct 9th). In (his/her) inactivity may (he/she) know You.
