CONFESSION

THINKING OF JESUS, NOT MYSELF

The SPIRIT reminds me that I am nothing, and that CHRIST is all. How can I even pretend I might be something worthwhile. Even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in Your eyes, LORD, much less man who is a maggot and a worm (Job 25:4-6).

You, FATHER, put all things under the feet of CHRIST and give Him as head over all. You seated Him at Your right hand far above all rule and authority and power and dominion. He is above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. He fills all in all (Eph 1:20-23).

CHRIST is altogether superior yet my default thinking centers on myself that spurs constant judging. “I don’t have enough faith; I don’t repent enough; I’ll never be able to make it to the end.” And when I think about myself, the introspection spurs constant planning—“I need to pray more; I need to do more; I need to feel more.”

“…it is not your hold of Christ that saves you; it is Christ. It is not your joy in Christ that saves you; it is Christ. It is not even your faith in Christ, though that is the instrument, but it is Christ’s blood and His merits that save you; therefore, do not look as much to your hand, with which you are grasping Christ, as to Christ” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, June 28th AM).

FATHER, I want my thoughts to rest on CHRIST—“His death, His sufferings, His merits, His glories, and His intercession…” Charles Spurgeon (ref#34, June 28th AM). SPIRIT, satisfy the desire of my heart; let the action of my thoughts turning inward remind me to stop, refocus, and think on CHRIST.

ADORATION

TRIBULATION TO PRAISE

“All of life is meant to reflect the infinite value of Christ” John Piper (ref#124, p115).

FATHER, if I bring glory to CHRIST in every circumstance then my attitude should be the same in both easy and hard circumstances. I pray to choose to not let this difficult circumstance affect my countenance negatively at all.

If I am entirely void of self-love, I can be plunged into an abyss full of tribulation without exciting any emotion in myself (ref#128, p459). FATHER, give me enough confidence in You that my natural frightened, angry emotion will evaporate.

Stay my mind on You (Isa 26:3). The bride in the Song of Solomon delights in attempting to describe her divine Bridegroom (Song 5:10-16); make this my work.

Empower me to rehearse the qualities of the heavenly Bridegroom. Make it sensible to me that joy can come when I recount His excellencies which are the most important to me (ref#128, p463).   And, with the praise welling up because of such activity, push me ahead that I may exclaim, “He is superior to all attributes and qualities” Madame Guyon (ref#128, p463).

FATHER, give me a revelation of CHRIST so shocking that I focus on CHRIST and forgets my tribulation. Cause worldly thought to be silenced with the captivating love of CHIRST (ref#128, p463). May my words to CHRIST simply be, “You are altogether lovely” (Song 5:16). May I be so humbled with my relationship with CHRIST that I be unmoved in any situation.

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“…prayer is indeed a power, on which the ingathering of the harvest and the coming of the Kingdom do in very truth depend….So wonderful is the surrender of His work into the hands of His Church, so dependent has the Lord made Himself on them as His body, through whom alone His work can be done, so real is the power which the Lord gives His people to exercise in heaven and earth, that the number of the labourers and the measure of the harvest does actually depend upon their prayer” Andrew Murray (ref#19, NINTH LESSON).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because not one sparrow is forgotten or uncared for in Your presence (Luke 12:6), I will wait for You.

Because the ravens neither sow nor reap yet You feed them (Luke 12:24), I will wait for You.

Because You care for me (1 Pet 5:7), I will wait for You.

Because You number every hair on my head (Luke 12:7), I will wait for You.

Because You meet all my needs according to Your glorious riches in CHRIST (Phil 4:19), I will wait for You.

SUPPLICATION

NON CHRISTIAN Resisters

[We all have friends and family that do not want anything to do with Christianity so it is up to us to pray for their salvation. Here’s an opportunity to pray for them. Fill their name in the blanks.]

SAVING FAITH

…FATHER, though I did not know it, You sought me long before I sought You, enabling me to believe in You. You worked in my heart in a mysterious way, making possible my belief before I trusted You (ref#63, p 708).

Having chosen me, You called me to come to You, and when I came, You declared me ‘not guilty,’ filled me with CHRIST’s goodness, gave me a right standing with Yourself and promised me Your glory (Rom 8:30).

I have come, but I perceive ____ has not. But, if You have chosen (him/her), (he/she) will come. Not only will (he/she) come but come turning away from (his/her) former pattern of living, seeking to have (his/her) sin and guilt removed, and looking forward to entering into a genuine relationship with You that will last forever (ref#63, p710).

FATHER, I pray these three requests for ____:

  • That (he/she) obtain basic knowledge of the facts of the Gospel and approve of what (he/she) hears (ref#63, p712).
  • That (he/she) trust in CHRIST knowing that He is the only way to You (ref#63, p712).
  • And that all this leads to a decision of (his/her) will to depend on and put (his/her) trust in CHRIST as (his/her) Savior (ref#63, p712).

Thomas, the Apostle, did not make a personal decision to trust CHRIST wholeheartedly in the years he was CHRIST’s disciple or even immediately after CHRIST’s resurrection (John 20:24-28). I pray in hope that You will cause ____ to, in (his/her) time, reach the point of willfully choosing to enter into a relationship with CHRIST.

“…whoever did want him, who believed he was who he claimed and would do what he said, He made to be their true selves, their child-of-God selves. These are the God-begotten,…not flesh-begotten…” (John 1:12-13 MSG).

UNIMAGINABLE

In all the earth Your name is majestic (Ps 8:1);

You stand out from the rest;

You are salient, LORD (ref#110, p1184)

and cannot be conceived in my mind (ref#110, p1458).

You have set Your glory above the heavens (Ps 8:1),

making You prominent, noticeable and admirable (ref#110, p1184, 17).

You inspire reverence, fear and wonder (ref#110, p96).

To me, You are just unimaginable (ref#110, p1458).

You do marvelous things, yes LORD (Isa 29:14),

for You are wondrous and extraordinary (ref#110, p1536),

supernatural and miraculous—

stupendous (ref#110, p865).

For You do astonishing things (Isa 29:14)—

surprising, surprising (ref#110, p1536),

Indeed, You are splendid and excellent (ref#110, p17)—

simply awesome (ref#110, p96).

CONFESSION

REJECTING PLAUSIBLE ARGUMENTS

…FATHER, I become deluded with plausible arguments (Col 2:4) if I don’t believe that in CHRIST are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge (Col 2:3).

Plausible arguments come mainly from my own logical head. They convince me to look for an easy walk through the day. My heady thoughts are loud and anxious to engage me in self-satisfying work. These thoughts are not at all insightful into Your ways and purposes or rich in enlightenment. They make sense to me but disregard CHRIST’s experience altogether so they are evil even when the outcome results in good deeds. They may please me and my peers but not You, FATHER.

The Apostle Paul’s witness convinces me that what he’s doing is Your will, FATHER, and not his own:

“I want you to know how glad I am that it’s me sitting here in this jail and not you. There’s a lot of suffering to be entered into in this world — the kind of suffering Christ takes on. I welcome the chance to take my share in the church’s part of that suffering” (Col 1:24 MSG).  “…I am making up whatever…remains to be completed…of Christ’s afflictions…” (Col 1:24 AMP).

“I have still some afflictions to pass through before my race of glory be finished; afflictions which fall on me on account of the Gospel; such as Christ bore from…persecuting people” (ref#15, [Col 1:24]). As CHRIST and the Apostle Paul, my witness must be so opposed to worldliness that I elicit anger from non-Christians.

FATHER, if my activity is not met with anger from non-Christians drive me to reconsider my decision-making. Am I engaged in my choices or Your choices?

PSALM 138

…FATHER, in the day I cried out,

You answered me.

You made me bold—

Mighty and resistant to temptation (Ps 138:3).

For though You are on high,

Yet You have respect for the lowly.

You bring me into fellowship with You.

But the proud you only recognize from a distance (Ps 138:6).

Though I walk in the midst of trouble,

You will revive me;

You will stretch forth Your hand against my enemies,

and Your right hand will save me (Ps 138:7).

You will perfect that which concerns me;

Your mercy, O LORD, endures forever —

forsake not the works of Your own hands.

Don’t abandon me, for You have made me (Ps 138:8).

I will praise You with my whole heart;

Before armies of angels I will sing.

I will worship You and praise Your name;

For Your lovingkindness, truth, and faithfulness

(Ps 138:1-2).

PRELUDE TO PRAYER

Prayer Facts:

“It is more than asking, it is communion, fellowship, co-operation, identification, with God the Father and the Son by the Holy Spirit” Samuel Chadwick (ref#4, p61).

Reasons for Waiting for GOD:

Because You work out everything in agreement with the counsel and design of Your own will (Eph 1:11), I will wait for You.

Because every good and perfect gift comes from You with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning (James 1:17), I will wait for You.

Because You satisfy the longing soul and fill the hungry soul with good (Ps 107:9), I will wait for You.

Because You know how to rescue the godly out of temptations and trials (2 Pet 2:9), I will wait for You.

SUPPLICATION

CHRISTIAN

[Because we are Christians and live in the world we will always need prayer for our walk and for witnessing to others about CHRIST. Here’s an opportunity to pray for others or even ourselves. Fill their name or your name in the blanks.]

A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS

…FATHER, I pray for ____ that (he/she) obey Your calling to be a priestly intercessor. (All Christians are called to be a kingdom of priests [Ex 19:6]). Attune (him/her) to be mindful of ones caught in transgression (Gal 6:1) that (he/she) will seek to restore them “by affectionate admonition, by faithful instruction, and by prayer” Barnes’ Notes (ref#16, [Gal 6:1]).

 Cause ____, FATHER, to live as a priest by fearing You and standing in awe of Your name (Mal 2:5). Keep true instruction in (his/her) mouth and assist (him/her) to walk with You in peace and uprightness. By such a walk (he/she) will turn many from iniquity (Mal 2:6). Impassion ____ to guard knowledge so that people should seek instruction from (him/her) (Mal 2:7).

Cause ____ to desire to labor to fill up that which is lacking in others (ref#67, [Gal 6:1]). Discharge (him/her) to offer up to You “spiritual sacrifices, not only of prayer and praise, but of devout affections and pious resolutions” which is the work of Your own SPIRIT in (him/her) (ref#18, [Ex 19:1-8]). Quicken (him/her) to offer up services acceptable to You through CHRIST (1 Pet 2:5).

“As Christ bears our burdens, so ought we to bear the burdens of our fellow-man. The law of Christ, which is our duty to fulfill, is the bearing of the cross. My brother’s burden which I must bear is not only his outward lot, his natural characteristics and gifts, but quite literally his sin. And the only way to bear that sin is by forgiving it in the power of the cross of Christ in which I now share. Thus the call to follow Christ always means a call to share the work of forgiving men their sins. Forgiveness is the Christlike suffering which it is the Christian duty to bear” Dietrich Bonhoeffer (ref#10, p90).
